Survey Project

Critical elements of a network service

Introduction
Context
.
The emergence of new Internet applications has fostered attempts to add new services to the Internet infrastructure.  Examples of new network services that have been proposed in recent years include:

Name Service
VPN (Virtual Private Networks) Encryption over virtual leased lines
IP Multicast Data dissemination
CDN (Content Delivery Networks) Fast access to web data
DiffServ (Differentiated Service) and
IntServ (Integrated Service)
Traffic differentiation

While some services have been widely adopted within a short time frame, the adoption of other services has either been slow, failed entirely, or has been limited to small networks.   Our goal is to  determine the critical elements that make a new network service succeed or fail.

Scope. Since there is only very limited data  available on the factors that let a new network service succeed or fail, we resort to a survey to collect information on such factors from people whose work relates to  network services.

Ideally,  the results of this study will provide valuable information about the complex relationships between technical and business aspects of a network service. Ultimately, the results from this study should help to improve the design process for building new network services.

Web Survey. The survey is presented in terms of 32 mostly multiple-choice questions. Taking the survey should take no more than 15 minutes. The target group  for the survey are people working in Internet related organizations, specifically,  engineers, researchers, managers with engineering background, CEOs, CTOs, and IT managers from ISPs, and vendors of networking hardware or software. The survey also includes researchers from academia.
