Reading Assignment 1— Information Retrieval in the Next 10 Years

In class we have briefly discussed Vannevar Bush's report "As we may think," which laid down his vision of "men of science should then turn to the massive task of making more accessible our bewildering store of knowledge". This report envisioned the creation of internet and search engine decades before their birth.

Let's read this report more carefully again, and think about in the next ten years what should be there. For example, what new need of information/knowledge people would have by then, and what kind of new techniques or system should be there to help people achieve it? In retrospect, we have created internet, Web, search engines, and online social networks in the past third years to satisfy people's need to access information and get connected. Then what would be the next?

A Piazza discussion thread has been created for this reading assignment, and please post your thoughts there before February 26th, 11:59pm.
