Short Biography

Sang Hyuk Son received the B.S. degree from Seoul National University, M.S. degree from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and Ph.D. from University of Maryland, College Park. In 1986, he joined the Department of Computer of the University of Virginia, where he is currently a Professor. He has held visiting positions at Korea Advanced Inst. of Science and Technology (KAIST), Ecole Centrale de Lille in France, City University of Hong Kong, and Linkoping University and University of Skovde in Sweden.

Prof. Son is the Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Real-Time Systems for 2007-2008. His research interests include real-time systems, database and data services, QoS management, wireless sensor networks, and information security. He has written or co-authored over 250 papers and edited/authored four books in these areas. The goal of his research is to design and evaluate models and methodologies for the development of robust and responsive computer systems and databases for complex real-time applications. Key issues of his research includes supporting multi-dimensional requirements, such as real-time, security, and fault-tolerance, providing real-time data/event services in wireless sensor networks, and undersea surveillance using sensor networks. His research has been funded by National Science Foundation, Department of Defense (DARPA, ONR, and Naval Ocean Systems Center), Department of Energy, Swedish and Korean Governments, State of Virginia, and industry (IBM, Unisys, Loral, Ready Systems, Migma Systems). He has served an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems (1998-2001), and is on the editorial board of the IEEE Transactions on Computers, Real-Time Systems Journal, Journal of Computing Science and Engineering, International Journal of Information Processing Systems, and Journal of Business Performance Management. He has served as the guest editor for the ACM SIGMOD Record, IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, Control Engineering Practice, Journal of Integrated Computer-Aided Engineering, and NETNOMICS, on special issues covering real-time systems, real-time databases, and e-commerce.

He has served as the Program Chair and General Chair of several real-time and sensor netwok conferences, including IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium, IEEE Conference on Parallel and Distributed Systems, International Workshop on Real-Time Database Systems, IEEE Conference on Electronic Commerce, and International Conference on Networked Sensing Systems. He is serving on the steering committee of International Conference on Networked Sensing Systems and IEEE Conference on Real-Time and Embedded Computing Systems and Applications. In 2004, Dr. Son received the Outstanding Contribution Award from IEEE Conference on Real-Time and Embedded Computing Systems and Applications. He has served as an ACM National Lecturer, and is the editor of the book "Advances in Real-Time Systems," published by Prentice-Hall, co-editor of "Real-Time Database Systems: Issues and Applications," and co-author of "Database Recovery," both published by Kluwer Academic Publishers. The most recent book he co-edited is "Handbook of Real-Time and Embedded Systems," published by CRC Press in 2007.
