The Contest is now over. No more entries will be accepted.
ll members of the Department of Computer Science
are invited to participate in the CS Design Contest, sponsored by the
Department of Computer Science
and the CS Graduate
Students Group (CSGSG). The goal of this contest is to design any
or all of the following:
- CS Dept. T-shirt design (for general use by the CS Dept.)
- CS Dept. coffee mug design (for general use by the CS Dept.)
- CS Dept. logo design (for letterheads, business cards, etc.)
The T-shirts and mugs will be given to students, visiting lecturers,
distinguished speakers, faculty candidates, and other guests. The
logo is intended for use on CS Dept. stationary, letterhead,
envelopes, business cards, etc.
If you think you have it in you to create designs that will be
identified with the CS Dept. for years to come, here's a golden
opportunity! So, design a CS T-shirt, coffee mug, logo, or all of the
above. The best designs from all the submissions will be chosen as the
designs for the official T-shirt / mug / logo, of the Department.
Prizes will be $100 cash for each winning design, and $50
for the first runner-up in each category.
This is a great opportunity to see your creative design(s) being used
on a massive public scale! (at least a couple of hundred mugs and
T-shirts will be commissioned professionally based on winning design(s)).
Details of the Competition
- Create your designs using any reasonable tool or media (e.g.,
Visio, Photoshop, MS Word, paper, etc.), and keep the final resolution
of your design at least 300dpi (so that it may be used in printed
documents, etc.).
- You can use full-colors in your design, but if so, please also
create a low-color version (i.e., 4-colors or less), just in case our
printing costs for full production become prohibitive.
- You may create and enter into the Contest up to three designs in
each of the categories (1) through (3) above (this increases the
chances of winning).
- Put all your design(s) on a single Web page - the URL of this
page would be your actual Contest entry.
- The judging will occur primarily through a general (web-form
-based) vote, polling all Department members, and then a judging panel
(composed of a mix of faculty and students) will make the final
selections based on the general vote. (Our
Chair has veto power over the panel's decisions).
- All designs that the Dept. decides to use will become the
property of the Dept. (entry into the Contest constitutes consent to
this rule).
- Questions about the CS Design Contest should be directed to Anand (or to Gabe Robins).
- In searching for design ideas/concepts, you may want to also look
at the new CS
Dept. brochure.
- You may also want to look at what other CS
departments and universities have chosen as their logos /
motifs.
- While it is difficult to specify design rules / guidelines a
priori, and we certainly do not want to limit or restrict the design
space in any way, keep in mind that often *simplicity* is the key to a
good design (think "Occam's Razor").
- Finally, we have placed in the CS Lounge a comprehensive
set of graphic design books (from the collection of Gabe Robins) which provide
a rich source of ideas for T-Shirt/logo/letterhead and other design
concepts and examples, color combination guides, etc. Please feel
free to look at these books for inspiration (but please don't remove
them from the Lounge).
Let the contest begin!
