Biographical Sketch

Kathy Ryall received a BA with a double major in Mathematics/Computer Science and Psychology from Wesleyan University, and an SM and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Harvard University. She joined the University of Virginia as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science in the Fall of 1997.

Research

Kathy Ryall's primary research interest is the design and implementation of systems in which the interface acts as a medium for people and computers to work together on solving problems, rather than as a means for people to control computers. As interactive applications become more complex, it is increasingly difficult to design interface methods that deliver the full power of an application to users, while enabling them to learn and to use effectively the interface to a system. The challenge is finding a balance between user intervention and computer control within the computer-user interface. Ryall's research has included the development of systems for a variety of tasks in the computer graphics and graphic design domains.
