Biographical Sketch
lf Weaver received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from
the University of Illinois in 1976. He
joined the University of Virginia
in 1977 and is now Director of the department's Computer Networks
Laboratory, Director of the university's Internet Commerce Group, and
founding Director of the state's Internet Technology Innovation Center.
He was an ACM National Lecturer, gave keynote addresses at several
leading conferences, held the Lucian Carr III endowed chair, and is a
Fellow of the IEEE. He has supervised
over 120 research projects, advised over 65 graduate students, and
co-authored four books, six book chapters, over 140 refereed papers, and
a patent.
Research
eaver and colleagues developed the Xpress Transport
Protocol (supporting multicast and knowledge of the multicast group
members) for the U.S. Navy, and then turned XTP into a commercial
product. He was a founder of the Virginia's Internet Technology
Innovation Center, which provided technical and business strategy for
e-business, and developed e-commerce software for corporate and
government clients. His current research focuses on medical data privacy and
security, implemented by using web services to support
authentication, authorization, and federation across trust domains. He
is also developing delta
compression algorithms for diverse environments.
