CLAS Program in Computer Science

The Computer Science Department now offers an Interdisciplinary Major in Computer Science for students in the the College of Arts and Sciences. This new major leads to a BA degree. See http://www.cs.virginia.edu/ba/ for details. The CLAS program described below is still available for students who entered the University prior to 2006, but current students are encouraged to consider the major instead.

CLAS Program Students

The College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences are pleased to announce the continuation of our new Program in Computer Science for CLAS students. This exciting new opportunity is available immediately.

For many years CLAS students have demonstrated an awareness of the importance of computer science as an intellectual discipline through a strong demand for Computer Science courses. In addition, the Department of Computer Science has always valued the participation of CLAS students in its courses. In fact, CS was the first SEAS program to offer a Minor and did so primarily for CLAS students. Finally, from early on the College has facilitated these interdisciplinary studies by explicitly including CS courses as "inside the College". However, the increasing demand for CS courses within SEAS has lead to enrollment limits that, while not statutorily excluding CLAS students, in practice make it difficult for CLAS students to create a plan of study in computer science with any assurance of course availability.

The program is being jointly (CLAS and SEAS) administered and is a mechanism by which a modest number of CLAS students will, for registration purposes, be granted "CS major status", thus providing the course availability necessary for substantial plans of study. Here "substantial" means a plan comparable to what may in the future be a major in CS (30 credits). However, since there is no formal BA yet the students admitted to the program will have a "home" CLAS department and an official CLAS major.
