Carbon dating
Archeologists can date a biological artifact by studying its relative concentration of carbon-14 to carbon-12.
The concentration is an indicator of age because radioactive carbon-14 decays to carbon-12 in a very predictable manner.
Carbon dating formula is
age
= ln(
concentration
) · −8620
The formula works well for carbon-14 concentrations of 0.001 or more (i.e., artifacts less than 60,000 years old).
