Extended Mediator-based Component Composition for Building Integrated Systems on the Web
ABSTRACT
I present two contributions to a mediator-based style of system composition and evolution. First, I exhibit an approach to using mediators and implicit invocation not only to extend component behaviors across integrated systems, but also for inhibition of component behaviors in systems where components are not statically coupled to the systems into which they are integrated. Second, I present results of an exploration of the feasibility of a mediator-based approach to ultra-large-scale system composition, in which the basic system components and mediators are RESTful web services and clients. I present a novel model system built in this style that illustrates how an approach such as this might eventually support a national-scale health information network of the kind now being contemplated by the Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) for Health Information Technology.
