Some Common Questions and Answers
-
How do I set up my own home page?
-
For people with CS accounts
Just for definitional purposes, if you can log into
machines with names like 'blah.cs.virginia.edu', then chances
are good that you have a CS account.
-
- Read up on how to use an
URL and how to write a
HTML document.
- Create the directory public_html in your
home directory.
- In the public_html directory, create a
html document called index.html. Note
that you should have an index.html
document for each subdirectory you create and
reference via links (anchors, in html parlance).
- Make sure that the public_html directory, any
subdirectories, and any files you put in are
readable and executable by anyone. Consult
someone who speaks UNIX-ese for info on how to do
this.
- You can access the index.html file with
the following http address, using your user ID
instead of sk2n:
http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~sk2n/
- Notify us that you have a page available you'd
like to show to the world, and make sure to give us:
- Your name.
- Your status (undergrad, grad, etc.).
- The http address
you'd like us to put in.
Then we'll put it into the
list of people with home pages.
-
For people without CS accounts
- This usually means that you have an account usually with
a specific machine. You will need to talk to the folks who manage
your account (for example, ITC) to ensure that the machine(s) you have
an account has a web server running. If it does, then create a home
page using their instructions, and mail us:
- Your name.
- Your status (undergrad, grad, etc.).
- The http address
you'd like us to put in.
Then we'll put it into the
list of people with home pages.
-
How do I use the CS scanners?
- The CS Administration folks have got
how to use scanners down
pat.
-
How do I install a CGI program?
- In order to install a CGI program, you
will need to use another program called cgiwrap. Note that
questions regarding modifying/building CGI programs will be
thrown in the bit bucket, unless you are absolutely
certain that it is a problem with the server itself.

I have a question about Netscape...

Mosaic, and doesn't support Netscape at all. However, some kind
souls have made a Netscape help page for
