Some Common Questions and Answers

How do I set up my own home page?

For people with CS accounts

Just for definitional purposes, if you can log into machines with names like 'blah.cs.virginia.edu', then chances are good that you have a CS account.
  1. Read up on how to use an URL and how to write a HTML document.
  2. Create the directory public_html in your home directory.
  3. In the public_html directory, create a html document called index.html. Note that you should have an index.html document for each subdirectory you create and reference via links (anchors, in html parlance).
  4. Make sure that the public_html directory, any subdirectories, and any files you put in are readable and executable by anyone. Consult someone who speaks UNIX-ese for info on how to do this.
  5. You can access the index.html file with the following http address, using your user ID instead of sk2n:
    http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~sk2n/
  6. Notify us that you have a page available you'd like to show to the world, and make sure to give us:
    • Your name.
    • Your status (undergrad, grad, etc.).
    • The http address you'd like us to put in.
Then we'll put it into the list of people with home pages.

For people without CS accounts

This usually means that you have an account usually with a specific machine. You will need to talk to the folks who manage your account (for example, ITC) to ensure that the machine(s) you have an account has a web server running. If it does, then create a home page using their instructions, and mail us:
  • Your name.
  • Your status (undergrad, grad, etc.).
  • The http address you'd like us to put in.
Then we'll put it into the list of people with home pages.
