Introduction

TeX is a very powerful typesetting program that is free and runs on nearly every platform. However, there is little reason to start learning TeX if you don't already know it - rather learn LaTeX. LaTeX adds a layer of abstraction between the author and the document, making it possible to specify the logical design of the document rather than the actual physical layout.

If you really want to use plain TeX, the best way to begin learning it is with the Gentle Introduction to TeX (postscript version). The definitive TeX reference is The TeXBook, by Knuth (Addison Wesley, 1984, ISBN 0-201-13447-0, paperback 0-201-13448-9). The CS dept has a copy of the TeXBook, it lives in 233.
