Introduction

Visio is a Microsoft Windows application that is used for making scientific and engineering diagrams, flowcharts, and schematics.

Capabilities

The Details

Location

Visio is not officially supported by the department. In fact, I know of only one computer that currently has Visio: Kevin Sullivan's. If there are more that you know of, please send a comment as shown below.

Running

When you create a new Visio document, you will be asked what type of document you wish to create. The various types represent different sets of pre-defined drawing objects that will be readily available for you. You should pick the set that most closely resembles the task you wish to do. For example, there is a set specifically for flowcharts. Note that you can still use other sets of pre-defined drawing objects by loading the set into the current document.

Using -- The Basics

Once you have picked a set of drawing objects, you can simply drag the object from the set list into the document window. Once you have placed the object, for some objects, there is attached text, which will be automatically highlighted for you to change. If you wish to move or resize the object at some later time, simply click and drag the object, or click on the object and then click and drag one of the black dots on the frame around the object.

Some objects are connecting objects in that they will draw some form of line or arrow from one object to another. To use one of these, simply drag the connecting object so that one end is attached to the first item you want it connected to. Then you can grab the other end of the connecting object and drag it to the second item you want it connected to.

Getting Help

There is fairly decent on-line help for Visio, and in fact, just about anything you might need to know about how to use this package is contained within the on-line help.
