et to know as many of the CS department members as possible; this
includes your mentors that are assigned to you prior to coming to
UVa, the CS Graduate Student Group (CSGSG),
the secretaries and other
personnel in the Engineering School, and the "older"
graduate students. Some of
these people will become invaluable resources during your career
here as a student.
As quickly as possible, find out what software tools the department requires you to know; be sure you learn these ASAP. Make use of them as much as you can. Use them for simple tasks; use them for classwork if possible. Learn who the experts for each product are; a good source for this information is the Helpnet you are browsing now.
