Over 25 years ago the internet was born in the form of ARPANet. Since then there has been an incredible proliferation of communications standards, all of which are mediated by the TCP/IP protocols. Likewise, users of the internet have developed many methods of transferring information within this framework, often circumventing the limitations of these protocols.

Transfer Protocols

To use most communication software, knowledge of a particular protocol is not necessary. However, it is good to know the common names of transfer protocols such as TCP/IP, FTP, MIME, SLIP, and NNTP.

Encoding Schemes

Often data is archived, compressed, or encoded before sent electronically, which often means that information received from the net will need to be converted from an easily transmitted form back into the original.
