How do I convert a man page to ordinary text?
$ man whatever | sed 's/_\^H//g' > outfile
Then, use Emacs to delete all the ^_.

How do I use my workstation as an X-terminal into another machine?

OK, so I fingered a person, and they're on "grumpy". So where is that machine?

How do I run a program for another architecture without having to login to another machine?
runon othermachine programname

If the department computers seems really slow, what should I do?
Try the following:
/usr/ucb/ps -auxww (a snapshot of the system)
/usr/ucb/vmstat 5 10 (50 second trace of various system performance statistics)

I want to edit my desktop colors. What colors are available?
Look at your .?mrc file (.tvtmrc, .mwmrc, .ctwmrc, .fvwmrc, etc.). Use xcolors to find out what colors you can use.

How do I print out a text file 2 pages to a sheet?
Use enscript. e.g. enscript -Pprinter file.txt

How do I print an A4 document on letter paper without having the top lines chopped off?
Use psresize. ("man psresize" for more information.)

Is there a command for taking a postscript file and printing it 2 pages to a side (like enscript does with normal text files)?
FOR DOUBLE SIDED SLIDES:
To print landscape slides on the double sided bw printer, try:

	lp -dbw -ohd slide.ps
FOR DOUBLE SIDED PAPERS:
To print portrait slides on the double-sided bw printer, try:
	lp -dbw -ovd paper.ps
FOR 2-UP SLIDES:
To collect 2 landscape slides onto one portrait page, try:
	psnup -2 < slide.ps > slide_2up.ps
To collect 2 portrait pages from a paper on one landscape page, try:
	psnup -2 < paper.ps > paper_2up.ps

How do I search for a file on the filesystem?

How do I figure out how much disk space I'm using?
du or du -s from your home directory.

On the Sun4 and Solaris (Sun5) machines, how do I start up X-Windows?
On the Sun4 machines, type startx. On the Sun5 (Solaris) machines, type startx5.

Where are the Motif libraries and includes on the SunOS systems?
/X11.5/include and /X11.5/lib

What are all of the machines in the department and what LANs are they on?
Look at the text file /usr/cs/lib/machines.

In Mosaic, how do I abort a transfer?
Click on the spinning globe.

When I telnet or rlogin, sometimes I get weird characters for [backspace] or [delete].
Try stty erase '^H' or stty erase '^?'. Also try [shift-delete] for a temporary solution.

What draw programs are available on the fileserver?
xfig

In XFig, I can't seem to save or load files
Instead of using ~, try specifying the full absolute pathname.

How do I print transparencies on the Xerox Color Printer using lpr?
lpr -Pxerox /usr/cs/lib/Xerox/set_tray_1
lpr -Pxerox your_stuff
lpr -Pxerox /usr/cs/lib/Xerox/set_tray_3

How do I print color transparencies on the Xerox color laser printer from within FrameMaker?
From the Print dialog box, enter xerox:2 as the printer name.

What do I do if I want to make duplex copies and the copier says "Remove paper from duplex tray"?
Find the duplex tray under lever 5 in the copier and remove the paper there.

How do I pretty print C code?
vgrind

How do I find out the status of a printer?
prstat -Pprinter or lpq -Pprinter.

How do I find out what files haven't been accessed in a while.
find . -atime +60 -ls
This will find all files from the current directory and down (traverses subdirectories) that have an access time (atime) that is more than 60 (+60) days old and list the files (ls).

How do I make backups with an 8 mm tape?

How do I make an already running active process run in the background? Hit Ctrl-z to suspend it, then type bg.

How do I get xhtalk3 to show just names only?
xhtalk3 -textOnly

The xerox printer is queueing jobs but not printing them. What do I do? (This problem is should be fixed now.)
The problem is the Axis box. To fix this problem pull out the power supply in the back of the box, wait 15 sec., and plug it back in. This resets the box and that seems to clear up the problem. Then send mail to root to let us (me!) know that you have reset it.

How do I install new programs in contrib?
Assuming your program is foo, in /usr/cs/contrib/bin, make a link from foo->../.arch/bin/gs. Then, place the binaries in /usr/cs/contrib/.arch/bin.

Why does finger report that I've been logged on for a long time on certain computers?
There is some sort of problem with Exceed and the logout sequence. You can fix it by always closing all your xterms before logging out.

How do you get Netscape to automatically run Ghostview on postscript files?
You need a .mime.types and .mailcap file. These files should be located in your home directory. Here are two example files to use:
