The CS department has openings for two full-time undergraduate student system administrators, beginning at the end of this semester. The job offers full time employment during non-academic periods (vacations and summer semester), and ten hours a week while students are enrolled in classes full-time.
This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in developing a thorough understanding of modern information systems from a practical implementation and deployment standpoint. The knowledge and insight into the ramifications of system design gained through this experience is invaluable no matter what type of work you go on to do. All of our past student system administrators have found that the experience also gave them a real advantage in the job market that extended beyond just systems administration work.
We prefer to work with current first and second year students who are likely to remain with the department for a longer period of time, as there is a significant training period involved, although we will consider rising fourth-years as well. Previous experience is not necessary, nor is this open only to potential CS majors. We do want someone who is eager to learn and enjoys tinkering and problem solving.
