From humper@cs.virginia.edu Mon Oct 7 20:04:05 2002 From: humper@cs.virginia.edu (Greg Humphreys) Date: Mon, 7 Oct 2002 15:04:05 -0400 Subject: [Bridge] Mailing list Message-ID: <000c01c26e34$4ee8ce70$6501a8c0@cs.virginia.edu> Hi guys. I subscribed you all to the list bridge@cs.virginia.edu, which you should be getting this from. I'll use this list to send information about local events, organize meetings, or post other interesting things about our new favorite game. You should all feel free to use this list to ask questions about the game as you become better -- the questions and answers that go back and forth will likely be interesting to all of you. If you play bridge and a hand comes up where you didn't know what to bid or how to play, send it to the list! I hope some of you have had the time to play online a bit. P.S. Unfortunately our meeting this week conflicts with the talk by Paul Debevec, which I assume you are all going to (I know I am). Maybe we could arrange an alternate time to get together. In the meantime, I wanted to recommend the courses at www.bridgetoday.com again, and encourage you all to sign up for 101-104 and pool the e-mailed courses. Also, if you're looking for more books to learn from, there are tons of good choices. Anything by Bill Root is a good choice; his "Commonsense Bidding", "How to play a bridge hand", and "how to defend a bridge hand" are classics. Also, the club-diamond-heart-spade series by Audrey Grant are good to learn from. Regarding the upcoming tournament, there's some info at http://www.mabcbridge.org/mabc920/021018CharlottesvilleFallValley.htm, including the location and schedule. In general, mabcbridge.org seems to be a good place for information on local bridge games. On Friday, there are two 99'er pairs, which means that the events are limited to people with < 99 masterpoints (beginners). There is also a 99er pairs on Saturday afternoon. Adam and I will probably be playing in all the events, so if you want to come watch at 1:30 on Friday to figure out how the game works and play in the evening, that would probably work out well. If you just want to come watch a session and not play, that would be fine too. If you *do* want to play, however, you will need to have filled out "convention cards", which I can help you complete beforehand. The big local club game seems to be Wednesday afternoons at 12:30, although there's also a game on Thursday night, and one other one I believe. I'd encourage you all to go check those games out once you feel comfortable. -- Greg Humphreys, Assistant Professor Department of Computer Science, University of Virginia http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~humper/ From humper@cs.virginia.edu Wed Oct 16 17:15:18 2002 From: humper@cs.virginia.edu (Greg Humphreys) Date: Wed, 16 Oct 2002 12:15:18 -0400 Subject: [Bridge] Reminder: meeting today at 3:00 Message-ID: <000201c2752f$3825cfb0$463f8f80@cs.virginia.edu> Don't forget, we're getting together at 3:00 in room 113 for some more card play. I hope some of you have had time over the last couple of weeks to mess around online. If not, we'll continue to practice constructive bidding and perhaps even play a few hands out. Also, don't forget that the local tournament is this weekend, if you want to come watch there are two sessions Friday, three Saturday, and two Sunday. -- Greg Humphreys, Assistant Professor Department of Computer Science, University of Virginia http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~humper/ From humper@cs.virginia.edu Wed Oct 16 22:53:29 2002 From: humper@cs.virginia.edu (Greg Humphreys) Date: Wed, 16 Oct 2002 17:53:29 -0400 Subject: [Bridge] Tourney this weekend Message-ID: <001d01c2755e$78ef9ce0$463f8f80@cs.virginia.edu> Another friendly reminder about the tourney this weekend. More info, such as schedule and location, can be found at: http://www.mabcbridge.org/mabc920/021018CharlottesvilleFallValley.htm If you're going to come watch, you should show up probably no later than 15 minutes ahead of the game start so you can get a chair, find me and Adam, and generally not run around like a chicken with your head cut off. -- Greg Humphreys, Assistant Professor Department of Computer Science, University of Virginia http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~humper/ From humper@cs.virginia.edu Wed Oct 16 22:55:14 2002 From: humper@cs.virginia.edu (Greg Humphreys) Date: Wed, 16 Oct 2002 17:55:14 -0400 Subject: [Bridge] books Message-ID: <001e01c2755e$b5223a10$463f8f80@cs.virginia.edu> If you were at bridge today you know what I'm talking about. I left the Walter Miller book in the graphics lab for you to read. It's a good introduction to standard bidding methods. I highly recommend that you all get copies of : How to Play a Bridge Hand, by Bill Root, and How to Defend a Bridge Hand, also by Bill Root As soon as possible. I have both of these books, and I can loan them out, but you should all probably read these books and practice your play. -- Greg Humphreys, Assistant Professor Department of Computer Science, University of Virginia http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~humper/
