Message-ID: Hi All, I hope you are all are having a great semester so far, but do you feel like something is missing? Are you prone to start crying in the middle of the day? Do you wonder why you can't sleep at nights? Well, I have good news for you! ACM is ready to fill that void in your life and make you whole again. Come out this Wednesday, February 16th to OLS 011 at 6:30pm to the first ACM meeting of the semester. We will introduce our newly elected officers, talk about our very exciting plans for this semester(including a website competition, interesting speakers, and much much more!), and - as always - enjoy FREE PIZZA. Everyone is welcome to attend, so bring your friends! For more info, check out http://acm.cs.virginia.edu . So, to recap: WEDNESDAY(2/16) - OLS 011 - 6:30-7pm - FREE PIZZA! Dhruv Kapadia ACM Secretary P.S. Bring tissues, it might just be too beautiful to bear. Message-ID: <1108561271.3936.6.camel@copesetic> Just a friendly reminder, ACM General Body Meeting - TONIGHT(2/16) - 6:30-7pm - OLS 011 You don't want to miss out on the great times and FREE PIZZA! See you all tonight, Dhruv Kapadia ACM Secretary From horton at cs.virginia.edu Sun Feb 20 22:35:10 2005 From: horton at cs.virginia.edu (Tom Horton) Date: Thu Mar 23 11:27:29 2006 Subject: [Ugrads07] job: text-mining and visualization tools Message-ID: <421956EE.2090602@cs.virginia.edu> Student Job Opportunity: Development of text-mining and visualization tools We are looking for one or more people to work on a project involving the creation of text mining and visualization tools for users of digital libraries. The tools will be designed to operate on digital libraries containing literary texts (marked up in XML) and will be used by scholars and students in the humanities. The tools will be developed in Java, and will make use of a software environment known as T2K (text to knowledge), developed by the National Center for Supercomputer Applications (NCSA). Tool development will involve working with potential users of the proposed tools, and exploring information visualization in these tools. Additional info about these ideas is given below. The ideal candidate for this work would be someone who has or can quickly develop good Java programming skills, and is comfortable learning and using new tools (e.g. T2K and XML) and libraries (e.g. Java class libraries). You should be able and willing to communicate with humanities users interested in studying literary texts, so having an interest in the humanities is a plus (though not an absolute requirement). We are looking for one or more undergrads able to work as much as 10 hours/week (perhaps less), and who would be able to work on the project for several semesters (including summer, if possible, but certainly into next year). This would be an ideal situation for a student interested in doing a senior thesis in this area. We will also consider a qualified grad student who meets our requirements. Employment on the project could begin immediately. Salary will be based on the standard SEAS rates. If you are interested or want to know more, contact Tom Horton (horton@cs.virginia.edu) in the CS department. Thanks! More info below: ------------------------ This work is part of the Nora project, funded by the Mellon Foundation for two-years. The project is directed from the Univ. of Illinois, with teams at the Universities of Virginia, Georgia, and Maryland also involved. Text mining is a form of data mining, which has been described a the semi-automated discovery of trends and patterns across very large datasets. Text mining differs from data mining in that the source data is typically unstructured, i.e., natural language. T2K is based on a data mining environment called D2K. These environments support tool development by using and building components for a visual programming environment, and has strong visualization support. They are innovative, powerful software applications in their own right, and our project seeks to extend them to create significant tools for users in another domain, the humanities.
