From horton at cs.virginia.edu Tue Sep 26 11:09:24 2006 From: horton at cs.virginia.edu (Tom Horton) Date: Tue Sep 26 11:10:59 2006 Subject: [Ugrads07] CS ugrads email list updates Message-ID: <451942A4.5050307@cs.virginia.edu> Hello. The CS department keeps mailman email lists of all students majoring in CS, CpE, the BACS, etc. I have just updated these lists and added your UVa email ID to one of three lists: ugrads07, ugrads08, ugrads09. The number indicates the year you're intending to graduate, as far as we can determine it from the university's computer records. This list is not high-traffic, and all messages must get approved by me, so you won't get spam on this. (Really!) It is important to stay on one of the lists if you're majoring or minoring in one of the computing programs, since we send email out about advising issues, course info, special events, info about jobs and internships. But, you can unsubscribe if you wish at anytime. The "welcome" email you got from the mailman system has a link and password by which you can do this. If you have been subscribed to the wrong year, you can unsubscribe and re-subscribe to the right one yourself if you want to, but it's fine if you drop me a note -- I can take care of that. Tell me which list you're on now and which one you should be on. If you're new to these lists or new to the our program, welcome! This enables freshmen through seniors to join in the program. Seniors can walk in May and delay graduation to August, to count these courses toward your degree, or graduate and join the program as a continuing ed student. Program Overview Study effective computing strategies for large-scale applications via personal experiences at international companies and organizations in the heart of Europe. CERN in Geneva, Switzerland will be the home location with guest speakers from and visits to industrial, academic, and international research labs in Geneva, Zurich, Lugano, and Lausanne. CERN is the European Organization for Nuclear Research and is situated on the border of Switzerland and France, just outside Geneva. While the primary mission of CERN is particle physics research, it has long been a center of computing research, being home to the OpenLab initiative and the birthplace of the World Wide Web. Students will learn about how grid and cluster computing are utilized in real world scientific computing and study the software development tools and environments in common use today. Students will interact with a diverse community of international students at CERN. Academic visits to institutions in the Italian, German, and French regions of Switzerland will be combined with weekend cultural excursions. This study abroad experience is ideal for computer science and information systems majors and minors, computer engineers, and scientists (physics, chemistry, biology,?) and engineers using computation in their studies. Students will live in double rooms in a hotel conveniently located near public transportation, allowing an easy commute to classes at CERN. Breakfast is included daily, and a public transportation pass is included in the program fee. Several day and overnight trips are planned to Zurich, Lugano, Lausanne, and Zermott, and a free weekend is included in the program as well to allow students to explore the region on their own. There is a slide presentation available at: http://international.udel.edu/studyabroad/programs/database.asp?PWDID=406 If you have questions, please email for more information. Thomas Friedman's recent bestseller has called attention to an issue that should concern all of us, especially those of us in the academic community. But, if the flipside of crisis is opportunity, this may be just the right situation at the right time to compel us to consider how we can embed enthusiasm for the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields into underserved communities.
