This is an opportunity to recruit for last minute full-time positions, internships, and co-op opportunities. === #2: Scholarships for women students attending research conferences ======= The national ACM-W is pleased to announce a new program that will provide support for women students in Computer Science programs (at the undergraduate or graduate levels) who wish to attend research conferences. For more info, look here: http://women.acm.org/scholarships.html === #3: DMP Program for Summer Research Experience =========== DMP is a very cool program where undergraduates who are women or from from underrepresented groups in computing spend the summer doing research with a faculty member at another university. See this site for full information: http://parasol.tamu.edu/dmp/ Note that applications are due Feb. 15! Here's an extract from the site: The objective of the Computing Research Association's Committee on the Status of Women in Computing Research (CRA-W)'s Distributed Mentor Project (CRA-W DMP) is to increase the number of women entering graduate studies in the fields of computer science and computer engineering. This highly selective program matches promising undergraduate women with a faculty mentor for a summer research experience at the faculty member's home institution. Students are directly involved in a research project and interact with graduate students and professors on a daily basis. This experience is invaluable for students who are considering graduate school, providing them with a close-up view of what graduate school is really like and also increasing their competitiveness as an applicant for graduate admissions and fellowships. In summer 2007, the Coalition to Diversify Computing (CDC) will also manage a DMP program (CDC DMP). The CDC is a joint organization of the ACM, CRA, and IEEE-CS. The objective of the CDC DMP program is to increase the number of men and women from underrepresented groups entering graduate studies in the fields of computer science and computer engineering. This program will be similar to the CRA-W DMP, but encourages applications from talented undergraduate men and women from underrepresented groups. With the CDC DMP, an option exists for the research to take place remotely, using collaborative technologies such that the student can remain at his or her home institution with local and remote mentors. This option includes at least two visits by the student to the remote mentor's institution. ==== #4: company seeking web page design ==================== I'm looking for someone to help me redesign my company's web page. I think I'd like to locate a CS student with graphics/layout expertise also or a CS student and a art/layout student who had some time to work on this. The task would be to redesign my firm's web page (www.crowsey.com) to have a look/feel similar to a cross between google.com and frilotpartridge.com, and to implement it in a way that there are a few templates or style sheets so that as I want to add a case study or additional information it's pretty straight forward to do so. My need for this is immediate and pay would be either by the hour at a rate between $15 and $20 per hour or fixed price per defined task, depending on the task and skill of the students. _____________________________________________ C r o w s e y I n c o r p o r a t e d 312 Old Mill Road - Stanardsville - Virginia - 22973 www.crowsey.com - rick@crowsey.com voice: 434.985.9171 ? cell: 434.996.1233 Spatial Evidence | Risk Assessment | Decision Support From horton at cs.virginia.edu Thu Feb 8 11:26:27 2007 From: horton at cs.virginia.edu (Tom Horton) Date: Thu Feb 8 11:26:39 2007 Subject: [Ugrads07] return 001 key? graduation app! Message-ID: <45CB7963.1030707@cs.virginia.edu> 4th year computing students: (1) If you have a key to our computing lab, Olsson 001, and you won't need it the rest of the term, please return it soon to the CS office in Olsson 204. You'll get your $5 deposit back. You'll also help out our current CS340 class -- we're short keys and not all of them have one yet. If you still think you need it, no problem -- just be sure to return it and any other CS key to Olsson 204 at the end of term. (2) If by chance any of you did not fill out the application for graduation form (sometimes called the "elective sheet") back in the early Fall *and* you plan to graduate in May, please do that as soon as possible!!! Get the form from the SEAS Dean's office, and then print a copy of your VISTAA report and see your advisor. -- Dr. Tom Horton, Associate Professor Dept. of Computer Science, University of Virginia 151 Engineer's Way, P.O. (2) Check out this summer opportunity below: -------- Original Message -------- Date: Thu, 15 Feb 2007 10:05:36 -0500 From: Betsy Gott > I am writing with a summer job opportunity for the students in your Computing Machinery organization. I work for a program called Exploration, which is an academic enrichment summer program for kids in 4-12th grade. *We will be coming to UVA next week to recruit our staff for summer 2007*. I am hoping you could spread the word to your fellow computer machinery students, as we generally find that their interests and strengths are a good match for our specialized positions such as webmaster, IT Coordinator, Assistant IT Coordinator, etc. Former Exploration staff have found the program to be rewarding, fun, and eye-opening, and have returned to us year after year. Exploration ("Explo") is a summer enrichment program, in which our students take classes in academically fulfilling areas, do activities that are fun and creative, and take field trips around New England. The Junior Program is located at St. Mark's School in Southborough, MA and is for children from 4-7th grade. The Intermediate Program at Wellesley College is for students in 8-9th grade, and the Senior Program at Yale is for high school students. We are looking for dynamic, intelligent, college-aged staff to come work at our program for seven weeks, with responsibilities of teaching our children, doing activities with them, and living in the dorms. Teaching opportunities range from math to dance to physics to fine arts to political science to cultural studies and much more. *I will be on your campus on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb 21-22nd. We will hold an information session on Wednesday at 6pm in Newcomb Hall, Rm 168, and conduct interviews the following day.* I am hopeful that you will spread the word to people that would be both interested in, and a good fit for our program. As the head of the Association for Computing Machinery, you have daily contact with some people that would make very good Exploration staff members, and could have a wonderfully fulfilling summer! If you or your group members would like more information, please visit our website: www.explo.org to see pictures and an in-depth description of what we do. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you in advance for your time!
