We have adopted the use of C++ as the first and primary language in the curriculum. An essential aspect of the curriculum is the use of closed laboratories.

The topics covered in this workshop include:

• discussion of the UVa curriculum philosophy, the closed laboratory mode and how they can be adapted;
• strategies to achieving course/curriculum change within your institution;
• hands-on experience using C++ in a closed laboratory environment;
• adaptation of course materials for different environments;
• sharing our experiences with teaching C++ and using the closed laboratory model.
