Lab 1 -- Week of 6 September 2004

CS 101 Standard Laboratory Procedures

Each week there will be one or more concepts with which the lab will be concerned. The examination of those concepts will often require downloading a file or files from the class website and manipulating those files using the Java programming IDE JCreator. The files for labs can be found on the lab page of the CS101 class website - www.cs.virginia.edu/~cs101. The purpose of this week is to gain familiarity with the software tools for this course.

You need to start up the Home Directory Service on your lab machine. Do not use the web interface! That interface does not provide access for JCreator to your files. On the desktop there is a Home Directory Service icon. Double click the icon to start up the service and then logon using your official UVA ID number and the appropriate password.

To download a file from the class website, right-click on the link of interest and then select the menu option Save Target as. This selection will cause a pop-up window similar to the following to appear.

All files need to be saved to your home directory To do so, first click on the My Computer icon in the pop-up window. Next click on the drive associated with your home directory.

The typical lab file that you will manipulate will be one that you downloaded from the CS 101 website. The file will most likely be a Java file and you will manipulate it using JCreator.

JCreator is an IDE - Integrated Development Environment. This IDE allows you to create, edit, compile, and execute Java programs.
To examine a downloaded file, use the File menu of JCreator and select Open. Follow a procedure similar to the one used for specifying a download location to open the desired file.
To create a new file, use the File menu of JCreator and select Java File. Then enter the file name in the appropriate text field and specify its folder by browsing through the use of the ... button. For CS 101 labs, the folder must in your home directory. Once these actions are completed, click Ok.
A program can be edited, searched and saved within JCreator using the standard Windows text commands. Other commands can be found on the File and Edit menus.
To compile a Java program file with JCreator, use the Build menu and select Compile File.
To run a successfully compiled Java program file with JCreator, use the Build menu and select Execute File.

Disconnect from the Home Directory Service. Close all windows and reboot the machine.

Download the file QuotationDisplay.java and save it to your Home Directory folder.
Compile and execute the program. If you have a lab partner or lab assistant, show them the result.
Submit the program using the laboratory submission interface. Only submit the QuotationDisplay.java file. Your account name is your University email id. Your password is the last four digits of your University id number.

Implement a Java program MeDisplay.java that displays a mini-autobiography using this file as a basis for your program. The output of your program should have reasonable line breaks and be at least 10 sentences.
Demonstrate your working program to your lab partner and a laboratory assistant.
Submit your completed MeDisplay.java program electronically. The program requirements are described starting on page 100 of the text. Only submit the MeDisplay.java file.
