Professional

I'll be joining the University of New Orleans in August 2008 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science with a joint appointment at The Research Institute for Children.

Research

My initial research involved lighting models for computer graphics which led to graduation with honors in May 2000 from Mary Washington College. In August 2000, I entered graduate school at the University of Virginia and earned a Master of Science degree in August 2002 with a thesis based on the application of concepts from discrete mathematics and topology to the field of data mining. This work, with Professor John Pfaltz, led to a patent and two refereed publications. I then taught two undergraduate courses in discrete mathematics at UVa during the 2002-2003 academic year. In January 2004, I began cross-disciplinary work on human DNA replication timing which is the topic of my dissertation completed in May 2008. This work, performed in collaboration with Professor Gabriel Robins and Professor Anindya Dutta, has led to three journal publications so far, with another upcoming. More details can be found in my CV and on the Dutta Lab homepage. Here is a recent press release describing our collaboration and results published in Nature.

Personal

I enjoy teaching, advising, solving problems and writing code which is why I've been in school for most of my life. I also have a litany of more "normal" hobbies which have been largely neglected due to the aforementioned interests. I play a variety of sports including basketball, tennis, baseball, hockey, football and golf, but I spend more time in the gym these days due to a lack of active friends to play with. I also enjoy a variety of strategic board games, but that's another activity that has been rarely organized since college. When I'm feeling more introspective I practice my guitar and bass, watch a good movie or read an interesting book.
