Available Software
Classes of Users
Within the Computer Science Department, a variety of software are available to our users. The extent to which we provide copies and licenses depends on the status of the individual. In the table below, users are classified into two different categories of either advanced users or undergraduate users; advanced users include all of the faculty, staff, graduate students and PhD students.
Software Availability
As the different users, the software availabilities vary. Software will either be immediately available, not available, or available upon permission. This permission is granted by the Systems Staff.
Types of Software
We have classified our available software into three different categories. Each falls into either our default, itc, or msdn group.
- The default group is the software which is provided on each departmental computer as its basic install.
- Items which are in the itc group are provided by ITC from the RCSC Distributed Software Information database. Most of these items are provided free of cost to University members, but a few do require payment (such as Adobe). The full list of ITC provided liscenses and how to aquire them is here.
- The MSDN group makes up the software we distribute through E-Academy. Directions for logging into and downloading software from E-Academy is here. For undergraduate students, to be granted access to the MSDN software, enrollment in a relevant CS course is necessary. For advanced users, an email to root@cs.virginia.edu is all that is required.
