Once a week, a group of us from the UVA Computer Science Department go out for some kind of social outing at a local bar, coffee shop, or restaurant. The event is open to everyone (grads, undergrads, faculty, staff, friends, family, etc.), although it's usually made up of about a half-dozen graduate students. It's a good way to relax at the end of a hard day of studying, teaching, and doing research, as well as a good way to meet other people in the Department.
The Happy Hour group used to call itself "SIGBEER" (as in "special interest group for beer"), but we've backed away from that name in light of the fact that Coca-Cola has replaced Guinness as the Happy Hour beverage of choice for the majority of the regular Happy Hour folks. We also used to always meet at 5:30pm on Fridays, and we used to exclusively patronize restaurants that served beer and that were somewhere within walking distance of Grounds.
Unfortunately, interest in Happy Hour has dwindled recently, and so in the hope of appealing to more members of the Department, we are starting to change a few things... Don't worry, the character of the group won't change, though: We're still mostly a bunch of CS geeks, no matter how much we try to avoid talking about work. ;-)
To find out more about Happy Hour, either contact the Happy Hour Tsar or subscribe to the Happy Hour list by going to
http://www.cs.virginia.edu/mailman/listinfo/happyhour
and entering your e-mail address. Each week, we announce the week's Happy Hour plans via the mailing-list, so that's the best way to find out where we're going to be. If you can't meet up with us at Olsson, feel free to just catch up with us at whatever restaurant we happen to be at.
The following humorous newsgroup posts were linked from the original Happy Hour page, and in honor of the Happy Hour tradition, I've included them here:
