Sunset Crater National Monument is a speck of a place on the Arizona map. I went here because I had a day to kill after the Grand Canyon and before my redeye flight back from Las Vegas. The area surrounding the crater is pretty eerie - lots of black volcanic deposits and hill or mountain sized volcanic remnants. Sunset Crater is one of the best examples of a cone-shaped crater in the area and is a nice diversion if you are in the Flagstaff, AZ area. If you look closely you might be able to make out the old path up the side of the crater. Several years ago, the park service halted hikes up the crater face to stop the damage done by hikers and to preserve the spot for future generations.
