Jim Gunderson

This is a picture of me at Rattlesnake Canyon, CO - rated as one of the best natural arches in the Unites States. My wife, Louise, and I were here on a field trip to plot the extent of an invasive plant ( Tamarisk) to ground truth a cellular automata model of invasive plant spread we developed in 1994.

This was done as a project at The University of Colorado, Denver while I was working on my BS in Computer Science and Engineering. During that period, I also worked on a research project for Computer Vision for autonomous robotic vehicles, and a project on Planning and Scheduling Algorithms.

I began my graduate studies here at the University of Virginia in 1997, and recieved an MCS in December of 1999. The project I developed is an analysis of the relationships between different types of uncertainty on goal satisfaction for a simulated maintenance robot (See the publications list).

So, here it is November of 2001, and a lot has happened. I have proposed my dissertation topic in probability aware planning, and have designed and (partially) implemented a planning and execution system that expaects bad things to happen, and then deals with them.

If everything goes as expected (which is somewhat antithetical vis a vis my thesis), I'll be defending in late march or early April of 2002!
