1998 NPACI Integration Meeting Goals
There are four enabling technology thrust areas in the partnership: metasystems, data intensive computing, programming tools and environments, and interaction environments. Each of these represents an area where NPACI has chosen to significantly improve the state-of-the-art for users via the development and hardening of user-directed technology.
In each area there are a number of projects, each project in turn working with one or more application efforts. During the first year, when most of our efforts have been focused on getting started and building the technology push-application pull teams, most of our technology efforts are completely independent of each other (i.e., one application works with one technology group). Thus there has been little or no use of multiple enabling technologies in the applications.
To get the most bang for our buck from our enabling technology projects, we must ensure that:
If we fail to get our technologies working together, the result will be a significant decrease in the enabling technology efforts' value to the user community.
Integration does not happen by itself. To ensure success, we must have an integration plan and one or more software architectures that specify how the disparate software components will work together. Towards that end, the first NPACI integration meeting will be held at the University of Virginia on October 19-20. This meeting is being held immediately before the Fall NPACI executive committee meeting, which is also being held at the University of Virginia.
Each technology group would be expected to prepare a set of documentation BEFORE the meeting. This documentation will be distributed to the partners and will be used as the basis for future documentation. Each group should also prepare a list of questions, needs, and issues to be addressed during the meeting.
Note: The meeting is limited to 40 attendees. The meeting will begin Monday morning at 9:00 am and end at noon on Tuesday.

Open/led discussion with electronic white board to capture what is drawn (and allow those who could not make it to see what is going on). The idea is to get people really thinking about interactions, how things would need to work together, the sort of cool things they could do together, etc.

|Sleep on it, figure out what was wrong with what we laid out, what could be better, etc.|
