I grew up in Maryland, but spent 10 years in Northern California (completing my B.A. at UC Berkeley among other things). I've done many varied things including learning Yang style T'ai Chi, Judo, and Hapkido in UC Berkeley's Martial Arts Program. I'm currently in Charlottesville, VA and have just recently defended my Ph.D. dissertation. I will be a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at UVA for the 2006-2007 academic year.
I received my B.A. in Asian Studies in 1991 at UC Berkeley and have lived/studied abroad in China on separate occasions at the Taipei Language Institute, Peking University, and Nanjing University. At Nanjing University I participated in a joint John's Hopkins-Nanjing University graduate program in Chinese Studies and received a certificate in Chinese Studies in 1993.
After that, I worked full-time for several years at UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law while taking night classes, tutoring English as a Second Language, studying judo, and also working another part-time job with Watermind. During that period I won the Berkeley Staff Incentive Award for outstanding service to the department. The Award was a great honor, and the money that accompanied it was quite nice.
In 1996, I decided that I really wanted a degree in computer science, and that I wanted to devote myself as a full-time student again, so I applied to the New Horizons Certificate Program at Mills College. The program was fun and inspiring. It was so fun that in the process I managed (with the guidance of several faculty members) to win the Computer Science Award in 1999. The whole experience convinced me that not only did I want a certificate in computer science, but a masters degree as well. I was accepted to many good schools that I applied to, but chose to attend the University of Virginia where I received my Master of Computer Science in August 2001. My masters work was published and presented at the 2001 IEEE International Symposium on Performance Analysis of Systems and Software.
