keeping up with anita jones is never easy in addition to teaching in the department of computer science where she is lawrence r quarles professor of engineering and applied science she is on the road to washington regularly where she serves as cochair of the national science board she has been tapped to speak at fall convocation and has also headed the universitys science and technology commission charged with developing a plan for achieving excellence in science and engineering as the university enters its third century the blueprint she and her colleagues are drafting calls for the outlay of more than half a billion dollars over the next twenty years clearly large numbers dont intimidate her and with good reason jones spent the mid1990s as director of defense research and engineering at the department of defense where she oversaw a 35 billion annual budget that included the departments science and technology program research laboratories and darpa she was the first computer scientist and the first woman to hold this position even though her schedule is hectic she plans to keep her calendar open on at least one occasion this year the date shell be inducted as a fellow of the american academy of arts and sciences
