If today was a little over your head, it will get easier as you get
used to Unix. Try to review the and Unix commands over
the week. Email me at nrpaul@clemson.edu if you have any questions that
may be stumping you. Before we begin our next lab, I will open up the first 5-10 minutes for questions, so have your questions ready at that time.
VI QUICK REFERENCE
TUTORIAL ON VI
Let me begin by reiterating that there are other editors out there. Pico and emacs are easier. If you would like to go that route then this pico page may help you. I would like to mention that vi is found on most Unix boxes, and other Unix machines may not necessarily have the editor you may use normally (pico and emacs are common).
I emailed Rose about the editor, and she said she does not mind which editor you use. Before the next class period, you may want to try each of the editors. If vi was not to your liking (and you want the easiest editor to use), go to the Desktop_Apps and choose the text editor I showed you in class. I will probably use pico and the Text Editor found in Desktop_Apps in class for examples.
For my 8 o'clock class on Tuesday (Section 6), I recommend
trying pico. I
will try to not use vi in class, since it caused so much confusion.
