Gus Scheidt is a student in Computer Science at UVa. He is conducting the work described here as a part of his masters research. The focus of his work is content description (using XML) and content delivery, using preferences. He's done all of the programming for the demo we'll be conducting at the UVa SEAS Open House on Feb 22, 2003. He'll be defending his masters work in May of 2003. Gus did his undergraduate work at Roanoke College before coming to UVa. Joe Calandrino is a Computer Science undergraduate at UVa who is interested in text to speech (TTS) synthesis. In particular he is interested in context dependent TTS. If you've ever heard a TTS you know they don't always work as you'd expect. TTS is not easy! Joe believes there is opportunity in exploring TTS in cases where vocabulary and things that are likely to be spoken are known. He's currently exploring the latest National Weather Service TTS, which sometime in the last six months took a huge leap up in quality. We suspect context dependence plays a role. Joe graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School before coming to UVa. Paul Reynolds is a Professor of Computer Science. He's been at UVa for 23 years, working with great students like Gus and Joe. He occasionally has a good idea, and he has a knack for making things happen. Wayne Brown is in the Richmond, Virginia office of Symbol Technologies, Inc. His generous support, reflecting the generosity of the company he works for, has been invaluable to the research effort. We've had access to a freely provided Symbol 2D scanner for going on a year. Wayne makes trips to Charlottesville just to help us out. |
