Sriram Sankar

• I come from a small village called Malluppatti in India, and a primarily agriculturist family. I did my undergraduate at the College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University, Chennai. I worked with Prof. Ranjani Parthasarathi for my undergraduate thesis. I then worked for a year at D.E. Shaw India Software Private Ltd., Hyderabad, India. And right now I am doing my Masters in Computer Science at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville (which is a beautiful place to live in btw).

• My current research is in the domain of disk drives. The performance gap between the Processor and the Storage system has always been an area of tremendous research potential and still we are not really close to bridging the considerable gap. The challenge here is to come up with new techniques and designs, think outside conventional realms and try to bridge this gap. I collaborate with Prof. Sudhanva Gurumurthi and Prof. Mircea Stan in designing innovative disk drive designs and evaluating the performance and power tradeoffs of the myriad designs which we come up with. It has been exciting research and we have been able to see perceivable improvements in bridging the gap with our ongoing work. My work cuts across mechanical, electrical and computer science boundaries since we also look at the end-to-end design of systems using such innovative designs.
