Mystery Science Theater Episode Reviews

I have a bunch (probably around 100) Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes on tape, and occasionally get together with friends to watch them. As I do, and it's fresh in my memory, I'll rate it here.

The Day the Earth Froze (# 422)

Short: Here Comes the Circus
Review:
Pretty good, though it gets pretty long towards the end. I like the way the bots keep going dark ("And this embodies the horror that is the circus"), and Joel keeps yelling at them.
Best Quote:
"Oh no, they're doing it clown style!" Rating: 5
The Movie:
Review:
This is one of my favorite episodes. The "Sampo" stuff is priceless, and the way they treat Lemmenkeinen as a failure after he breaks the sampo is great too. It starts out a little slow, but it gets good fast.
Best Quote:
The songs at the wedding: "He's a failure, such a failure, la la la"
Rating: 9
The Skits:
Review:
I thought the "Ninja throwing cookies" in the invention exchange was cute. I thought the second skit was good too, especially where Tom and Crow want to make the audience "question their love for their spouses". And the "What is a sampo?" skit is a classic. To be honest, I didn't like "Gypsy Rose Me" though. I thought the ending skit was funny, however.

Crow pretending to be a bad smell: "I'm Dick Butkus!"

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie

Short: None
The Movie: (This Island Earth)
Review:
It was pretty good, but not one of the all-time greats. I think it was really cool that they had the Professor from Gilligan's Island on there, and I wish they did more with him. I liked everything up to when they left the planet, especially the stuff with "Weenie Boy" and Exeter's saying stuff like "your composer Mozart" (followed by Mike's "and I'm not an alien"). Once they left the planet, though, it really dragged and got confusing. I heard that they cut a lot from the original movie, which would explain a lot.
Best Quote:
(from the actual movie) "All that jerking his stick around must have made him flame out". No comment necessary. Rating: 6
The Skits:
Review:
Actually, I thought the skits were all pretty weak. Nothing that really stood out as memorable- especially for newcomers to the show (which is what I thought the point was). The only one I thought was even halfway good was Crow's digging through the hull for freedom
Best Quote:
Crow: "I calculated the odds that this would be a bad idea, then went ahead and did it anyway"

Squirm (# 1012)

Short: A Case of Spring Fever
Review:
To be honest, I was really looking forward to seeing this, after reading the Episode Guide for this short. It sounded really cool. Unfortunately, I was let down by the actual short. I think they could have done a lot more with the guy who hates springs (who says stuff like "gee, I wish there never were any springs"?), and Coily. But Mike and the bots spend a lot of time in stunned silence.
Best Quote:
Spring Prophet: "Springs are in guns, ..."
Mike: "..and speaking of guns.."
Rating: 4
The Movie:
Review:
Boy, they were right. This really is southern. But they do a good job of making fun of it. From the accents, to the references to Klan rallies, to the guy who talks like Hank Hills friend. The movie itself was a little disturbing (something about seeing a 6-foot high pile of worms come tumbling out of a bathroom freaks me out), which is moer than you can say about 99% of the episodes. And they did a good job with the running jokes and stuff. So, this might be contrary to most people's opinion, but I liked the episode a lot better than the short.
Best Quote:
All the "Mr. Beasley?" stuff.
Rating: 7
The Skits:
Review:
Eh. I'm not a huge fan of the Castle Forrester stuff in general, and the "Country Fair" stuff is good example why. It's really kinda dumb, and boring. I mean, when Dr. F and Frank had wacky plans, at least they were sort of well thought-out. The "Mikesy" skecth, though, fits in nicely with the stuff of yore. It was a bit predictable, but in a good way. The others (Servo thinks he's a southern belle, and Crow wears platform shoes) are ok, but not all that memorable.

Crow: "Do you even live here?"
