Overview

The CS department has a common need for research posters and other large format media to be printed in-house; to this effect, we own and operate ONE high quality large format inkjet plotter for Departmental use. The plotter is also commonly referred to as poster printer for our most common use. Note this poster printer use is ONLY for the Computer Science Department of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences faculty, graduate students and collaborators. This in not an undergraduate resource. Please contact your instructor for use of this resource.

Administrative Logistics

These poster printers are to be used for Computer Science departmental business only!

It is not to be used for printing your favorite Pink Floyd poster or photos of your dog.

Printing done through a request to root@cs.virginia.edu!!

To request a poster, please send email with poster attached to root@cs.virginia.edu.

These poster printers are very fast BUT Note times for sizes of plots and allow ADEQUATE LEAD time!

Poster Printers

Requesting a poster to be printed

The poster printer is located in Room 007 Rice Hall workroom this is where your poster will come out. Poster will be picked up on the 2nd Floor in either room 210 or 212

Please use the Pre-Sets sizes if possible

If you need a configuration not shown please send a ticket in so we can add it Note: Poster paper is only 36 inches wide. Therefore one dimension MUST be less than 36"

== Final note: please check your poster well BEFORE sending a ticket to root@cs.virginia.edu and

include in your email

1. name of poster


2. poster orientation [landscape or portrait]


3. poster size in inches


4. when poster needed [date and time]

Note: Do not use generic names! others are sending posters and "poster" is not helpful

and

sending a reprint ALWAYS change the name of a poster sent for reprint ie "Sans IEEE poster" reprint

This general purpose poster printer is named cs-poster and is physically located in the department print room, Olsson 234. this printer is currently off line

This high quality final print poster printer is named cs-plotter-2 and is physically located in the Systems Staff office work area, Olsson 113. Due to its location, this poster printer is only available during staffed hours, which is usually Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm.

This high quality final print poster printer is named cs-plotter-1 and is physically located in the Systems Staff work area, Rice 007. Due to its location, this poster printer is only accessible by staffMonday through Friday, 9am to 5pm.


Specifications

Available Media

There are many different paper sizes to choose from when printing your poster.


We currently have three types of paper available 1. Coated paper 2. Semi-gloss paper 3. High-gloss photo paper (default) Please do not attempt to change paper yourself. Ask an administrator (i.e. send mail to root@cs.virginia.edu) to change paper for you. HP has a nice help page to assist you in deciding which type of media will best suit your purpose. Remember that this is a DesignJet 2500CP, you will need that information to help you decide. For some extra general information, HP also has a page of Large Format Print Media that is compatible with our poster printer. Applications Capable of Utilizing the Printer Windows Applications

  1. Visio
  2. PowerPoint*
  3. Photoshop (only on the public machines in the lounge and 238)
  4. FrameMaker - Frame Template

Tips and Tricks

  • Printing a PowerPoint presentation on one big poster tends to create a very nice looking, professional poster. Just make sure if you are printing only one slide, that you check the "scale to fit paper" box before sending it to the printer.
