Setting up Pine (Alpine) for IMAP Gmail

To be able to use Pine (Alpine) to receive your IMAP Gmail

  • Enable IMAP on your Gmail account
    1. Sign into Gmail
    2. Click Settings
    3. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab
    4. Select Enable IMAP
    5. Save Changes

  • Open Pine (Alpine) on one of the interactive servers
    1. Type MSLA (Main>Setup>colletionLists>Add) and add the following collection:
         Nickname  :  Gmail (or whatever you would like to name the folder)
         Server    : imap.gmail.com/ssl/user=youruserid@gmail.com (ex: dlg5u@gmail.com)  
         Path      :
         View      :

2. You will be prompted to enter your password

  • Set-up SMTP to use the Gmail server to send email from your Gmail account
1. Go to the main menu in pine (m)
2. Select SETUP – Configure Alpine Options

3. Enter c (Config)

4. Select SMTP Server (for sending) and press enter
5. Enter in the following text:
  • smtp.gmail.com:587/tls/user=youruserid@gmail.com (ex: dlg5u@gmail.com)
  • Press enter
