Automated Reboots

Microsoft releases patches via Windows Update the second Tuesday of each month. Patches are downloaded to our update server, and we test whether they require a reboot. If so, we announce such patch approvals by means of cs-announce. Once we approve the distribution of patches from our update server to the CSDOM domain, Windows machines on the domain are automatically rebooted at 3 a.m. the following day.

If you have a long-running job on your Windows machine that will not complete by the time reboots are scheduled, it is possible to delay the automated reboot:

-- Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services
-- Right-click on "Automatic Updates" and select "Stop" (this requires administrative permissions)

Once your job terminates, please restart the Automatic Updates service so updates will be applied to your computer.

If you plan to start a long-running job between the time patch releases are announced and the automated reboot occurs, you may install the pending updates and reboot before starting your job; this will prevent your computer from rebooting automatically at 3 a.m.
