Welcome to the Computer Science Support Wiki!

This Wiki has information on nearly everything we do - all the computing services and policies provided by the UVa Computer Science Department (not ITS). There are also answers to some of the most common support requests we receive. If you do not find your answer here, please send mail to root.

Accounts

The department issues accounts which grant access to all departmental resources - network, printing, clusters, disk storage, etc. -

Who gets an account and for how long?

Faculty

CS & CPE Graduate Students

Undergraduate Students, Non-CS Faculty & Grad Students and non-UVa Collaborators

The department will issue user accounts to anyone actively working with a CS faculty member in some research (non-instructional) capacity, granting access to all departmental resources. These accounts are housed on the sponsoring faculty member's disk storage and will be maintained as long as the sponsor requests it. Accounts for access to instructional equipment (the Olsson 001 and Rice 340 labs, the lab unix cluster) are issued for courses each semester based on course rolls as provided by your instructor.

If you are working with a CS faculty member in any capacity beyond being enrolled in a course, and wish to have an account, please have the faculty member send mail to root@cs.virginia.edu requesting the account.

Systems Overview

The CS department provides a comprehensive computing infrastructure for department members and affiliates in addition to the resources provided for the entire university by ITS.

Networking

The department maintains our own wired network infrastructure, along with six public class-C IP address subnets. We rely on ITS for wireless networking.
