This is because the PDF has some pernicious "code" in it which causes a segfault of sorts in the HP JetDirect cards in our printers. No, there is no fix/patch/replacement for the cards and we can't afford to replace all the printers. If you will point me to the PDF in question, I'll convert it to "clean" PS then print it for you.
