Setup for UVA Exchange
The UVA Exchange server supports two access methods: MS-Exchange Services (a proprietary MS protocol) and IMAP. Outlook Web Services provides the propriety Exchange connectivity, and is limited to the Microsoft Outlook client (available for Windows and OS-X).

While ITS does not officially provide support for Thunderbird (they will not address questions regarding your email client usage), we still recommend and support this client. Other IMAP clients also work and have been tested on OSX and Android to yield mobile access. Unfortunately the third party software used by Microsoft to access Exchange via OWS (Outlook Web Services) on mobile platforms is insecure and not permitted on the UVa server.

There are a couple of important items to note:
- The "from:" setting for your imap client must list your UVA id and eservices. This is your "email address" so far as your mail client is concerned (not the same as the "account name"). This is of the form: email@example.com.Right now it is not possible to send from an alias. We relayed to ITS at a Migration Advisory Committee meeting last summer that this was really very unacceptable to many people. Please be aware that this may affect mailing list subscriptions because mailing list software has no sense of "you" only of an email address string.
- Many people report issues with the "Authentication Method" that Thunderbird defaults to (Kerberos/GSSAPI) - please be careful to check that it is set to "Normal Password".
- Many of you have never used services in the "ESERVICES" Active Directory managed by ITS. This AD is a completely separate password database; it is also the AD which was compromised last summer (2015). As a result, ITS disabled (expired) everyone's passwords in that AD last summer! If you are having trouble authenticating, please reset your ESERVICES password; the ITS Password Wizard can walk you through this - you will need to log into NetBadge (most likely your CMS password) to do this.
Thunderbird Windows & Linux (and other OSes)
Below are short directions and screen shots for either adding a brand new "account" entry or re-configuring your CMS account entry in Thunderbird. These are taken from the unix version of Firefox, but are identical for Windows (and should work on OS-X as well).
Adding a new account
To add your Exchange Server account as a new account, click on "Edit->Account Settings"; you'll get the following dialogue:
Click on "Account Actions" in the lower right corner and pick "Add Mail Account" from the drop-down menu; you will get the following dialog:
Fill in your E-Services/Exhange address - not an alias - this is key or Eservices will not send outgoing mail for you!. Thunderbird will now attempt to automatically discover the server settings:
This generally fails; you can simply click "Manual Settings" and you arrive at:
Update the settings to match the ones listed in the table above; they should match the ones in the picture above as well (with your ITS UserID instead of mine!).
You can choose to enter and save your password.
The "Your Name" String can be whatever you want displayed to email recipients.
Your mail should be all set up and ready to use!
Checking/Changing Settings to an existing CMS account entry
If you already have your account set up to access the CMS and you've been migrated to Exchange, you just need to alter a few account settings to access the Exchange server instead.
First, access your account settings, and modify the "Server Name" (the rest is the same as for the CMS).
Next, select "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" from the bottom of the left column, and then select "mail.cms.virginia.edu":
Click "edit" or just click "add"; you will see this dialog:
You can edit the description (optional), and then under Server Name, enter "mail.eservices.virginia.edu". Verify all the other settings - Port 587, STARTTLS, Normal Password - and your username (should be the same).
Finally, on the main settings page for the account, be sure the correct (Eservices) outgoing server is associated with the account; see the pull down list at the bottom of the dialog page, and verify that your email address is of the form <ITS-Uname>@eservices.virginia.edu:
Accessing my Old CMS Mail
As part of the migration, ITS is using an imap migration tool to move mail from the old CMS to the new Exchange server. They are placing the older email in an archive directory structure, separate from your new folders. This is for two reasons:
- To allow you to access new mail as it arrives, without waiting for the old folders to transfer to the new server.
- Because the storage format for Exchange is different than for CMS. CMS used mbox mail files to store "folders"; in Exchange all mail is a record in a database, with a field tagging the "folder name".
Once you've been migrated, if you use an IMAP client, you will need to "Subscribe" to your migrated CMS mail folder before you can see it.
In Thunderbird, you need to click on "File -> Subscribe" in the top menu and you will see a pop-up list of folders available on the server (be sure to select the Exchange account first!):
Click the ">" next to "CMS Migrated Mail" to expand the list of sub-folders and then check the subscribe box for each sub-folder you wish to see. If there are nested sub-folders, you will need to expand those and select each leaf node "folder" you wish to see.
