Congratulations to the Fall 2011 cs1120 Graduates!

Office Hours Cancelled

Posted by David Evans on 28 Nov 2011 in Announcements, Office Hours | Comments Off

Sorry, I will not be able to hold my scheduled office hours today. I will have my office hours tomorrow (Tuesday, 11-noon). If that doesn’t work, please email me to arrange another time. (Kristina will still have her normal office hours in Davis Commons, noon-1:30 today.)

Grades Update

Posted by David Evans on 27 Nov 2011 in Announcements, Problem Sets | Comments Off

Everyone in the class should have received an email from the alonzo-bot that summarizes the grades recorded for you so far. If you did not receive this email, or found anything incorrect or confusing in it, please email me,

If you did the J option for PS8, this email should also contain comments on PS8. If you did the other option for PS8, you should have received an email from me in reply to your message.

The second part of PS8 for the Java option is here: Problem Set 8J (Part 2): Typed Aazda.

Class 37: Computability in Theory and Practice

Class 37: Slides [PPTX]

Exam 2 is available now: [PDF]. Exam 2 is due at the beginning of class on Wednesday, 30 November.

If you prefer to type your answers for Exam 2 (which can include cut-and-pasting from your editor), you may use this Word template: [DOCX]. If you use the template, make sure you do not lose your formatting (including indenting) when you past into the boxes, and do not break the pagination of the exam. Please print the exam using single-sided printing.

Here’s the video on the philosophy of computability from today’s class:

Change in Office Hours

Posted by Jonathan Burket on 20 Nov 2011 in Announcements | 1 comment

Hey everyone!

I was originally scheduled to have office hours on Tuesday from 6:30-8:00 pm, but because of a Thanksgiving-related time conflict, I will be instead holding office hours on Monday (November 21) from 5:30-7:30 at the same location as always (Davis Commons). Bring any questions you have about Java, Problem Set 8, or CS in general! I will not, however, be able to answer questions about Exam 2, which should instead be directed to Dave.

Hope to see you Monday evening!

-Jonathan

PS7 Responses

Thanks everyone for your responses to the pleased-displeased-hopetolearn questions in PS7. This page contains all your responses: PS7 Responses.

We don’t have too many classes left, and I definitely won’t be able to cover all of the requested topics in the remaining classes, but it seems like it would be most worthwhile to have one class on Java (which will be Nov 28), one class on the Internet and web applications (most likely Nov 30), and one class on some exciting applications.

Rice Hall Dedication

Posted by David Evans on 19 Nov 2011 in News | Comments Off

The Daily Progress has an article about Dean Kamen’s talk as part of the Rice Hall dedication yesterday: Celebrity inventor speaks at dedication of UVa’s new science building, Daily Progress, 19 November 2011.

Note that the first two quotes in the article are from cs1120 student Josh Whelan, and cs1120 Assistant Coach Peter Chapman.
