ABET Site for Computer Science Department
University of Virginia
This Web site contains documents and information related to ABET accreditation of the two undergraduate programs
offered by the Computer Science Department at the University of Virginia.
The two programs documented here are:
- BS in Computer Science
- BS in Computer Engineering (jointly administered by the Electrical and Computer Engineering Program)
Curriculum Information on the Web: (1) Computer
Science. (2) Computer Engineering. (3) (Diagram
describing differences between the two degrees.)

- Evaluation Criteria: The BS in Computer Science degree will be accredited under the ABET/CAC
guidelines found here on ABET's Web site. Note that all other degree
program's in UVa's School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) will be accredited under the ABET/EAC
guidelines.
- Objectives and Outcomes: The degree program has defined educational objectives
and outcomes.
Note: Program objectives and outcomes are developed as part of a coordinated effort among all departments in the
School of Engineering and Applied Science, and all programs including the CS program have statements that reflect
the ABET/EAC policies, including the "A-K" required outcomes. Our program's objectives and outcomes statements
and the policies related to them will satsify both ABET/CAC and ABET/EAC requirements.
The CS educational objectives and outcomes must be designed to be consistent where appropriate with those of
the other program our department offers, the Computer Engineering degree. This is important because the students
in the two programs share many courses.
Draft of ABET Self-Study: The draft of the ABET self-study
is here in Word format and also in PDF
format. (This document is password protected. Contact Tom Horton if you need the user-id and password.) The
current version was updated on May 21, 2003, and was prepared for the "mock visit" organized by the Dean's
office. It is not complete, mainly in course descriptions, faculty CV info, and the appendices.
- Process for Monitoring the CS Program: Here is a document describing
the department's plan for its continuous process for monitoring the program's success. This plan includes how we
monitor our success in meeting our educational objectives and outcomes.
