Friday Poem

A rhyme from the title “‍with the moon came doom.‍”

Usually I make untitled rhymes, but sometimes a title is where I start just to see where it goes.

With the Moon came Doom

The sunshine brought the the flowers bright
The stars above made sweet the night
And e’en the lamps brought welcome light
But with the moon came doom.

A hundred hopes, a thousand dreams
Came day and night in lovely streams
Like heaven’s smile in gentle gleams
But with the moon came doom.

In Oldwick’s glade the children danced
Until a silver moon-beam chanced
To spear them souls, like footmen lanced
For with the moon came doom.

Quite soon the pleasant streets were bare
And shutters blocked the lunar stare
For it was well known everywhere
That with the moon came doom.

The moon-touched children strode down-hill
As lunatics so often will
Down to the docks to hunt and kill
For with the moon came doom.

The tide was high, but boats stayed moored
As in the hold all those on board
Hid safe—they hoped—from moon-touched horde
But with the moon came doom.
