Getting started on NPACI-net

NPACI-net is a Legion network for Legion users in the UVa community and other institutions. To get an account on NPACI-net, send an e-mail to vanet-admin@cs.virginia.edu asking for an account, explaining what you wish to use NPACI-net for, and what institution you work with. We will then arrange an account for you. You will then need to download a client install package. This involves downloading a binary executable file and a setup script or (for NT users) the NPACI-net OPR tarball for Windows NT onto your host machine. Instructions are below. Legion client install package for NPACI-net

The client install package has two parts: the binary executable files and the setup file. To use the package, following these steps:

  1. Download and place the appropriate compressed binary on your local machine. The binary files are rather large (12 to 100+ MB), so be patient. Binaries are available for the following platforms. Windows NT is still a 1.6.x beta release and we do not have binaries for SGI o32, n64, and FreeBSD platforms.

    Sun Workstations/SunOS 5.x
    SGI/IRIX 5.x or 6.x o32 build (version 1.6.6 only)
    SGI/IRIX 5.x or 6.x n32 build
    SGI/IRIX 5.x or 6.x n64 build (version 1.6.6 only)
    x86/Red Hat Linux 6.x
    x86/Red Hat Linux 7.2
    x86/FreeBSD 3.0 (version 1.6.6 only)
    DEC Alpha/Red Hat Linux 6.x
    DEC Alpha/DEC OSF1 4.0
    IBM RS6000/AIX 4.2.1
    HPUX 11.x
    Windows NT/4.0* tar file | NPACI-net OPR tar file (version 1.6.x only)

    Decide where you want your Legion root directory to reside and move the distribution file to that directory. Next, uncompress and untar the file (<platform_name> is one of {solaris, sgi_o32, sgi_n32, sgi_n64, linux, x86_freebsd, alpha_linux, alpha_DEC, rs6000, hppa_hpux}). The binaries files are all compressed tar files created with GNU tar and gzip. You must use GNU tar to unzip and untar the binary by running:

    [g]tar zxvf Legion-binary-<platform_name>-V1.7.tar.gz

    If necessary, you can download tar for free from GNU at http://www.gnu.org.

    This will create the "Legion" directory tree below the current directory. There should be no problems with file name truncation in the current release of the binaries so no check is necessary.

  2. Download the setup file: setup.sh or setup.csh. Edit the first line of the setup.{sh|csh} file so that the LEGION variable points to your local machine.

    SGI users: you must add the following to your setup script:

    in setup.sh:

    export LEGION_SGI_ABI

    in setup.csh:

    setenv LEGION_SGI_ABI <type>

    For <type> use o32, n32, or n64, depending on which build you downloaded. If you are using o32 or n64, please contact Norm Beekwilder at vanet-admin@cs.virginia.edu.

  3. Source the setup.{sh|csh} script. Depending on your shell, you will run:

    $ . setup.sh (ksh or sh users)
    $ source setup.csh (csh users)

    WinNT users: doubleclick Legion/legion_configure.exe

    You are joining a working net, so do not run legion_setup_state, legion_startup, or legion_initialize. (These will start a separate net.) Do not run legion_init_security.

    You can check to be sure that the package is correctly installed and that you are on NPACI-net by running legion_ls from the command line.

    If you have never used Legion before, you can look through the on-line tutorials or download the manuals. The following manuals are available: Basic User (ps or pdf), System Administrator (ps or pdf), Developer (ps or pdf), and Reference (ps or pdf). All of the Legion documentation is listed here (password protected).

* The 1.6.x Windows NT release is a beta version. There are several requirements and limitations that you should consider before you download. Please see section 16.0 in the System Administrator manual before you proceed.
