UVA UVA's Cyber Defense Team is No. 2 In the Country

The University of Virginia’s undergraduate cyber defense team earned an impressive second-place finish at the 2025 National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition, marking its best national performance in five years. UVA Computer Network Security Club wins 2025 MACCDC

The UVA Computer Network Security team took first place in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (MACCDC). This win advances the team to the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competiton (NCCDC). This win is the third year in a row that the team has advanced to the NCCDC.

UVA-Led Cybersecurity Internship Program Wins National Innovation Award for Election Work

The Virginia Cyber Navigator Internship Program (VA-CNIP) led by the University of Virginia and developed in collaboration with other Virginia universities, the Virginia Department of Elections and the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative was awarded the Election Verification Netwrok (EVN) 2025 Innovation Award. The EVN award recognizes path breaking product development that greatly facilitates robust election verification and auditng.

Test Resource Management Center Contract

We received funding to integrate our closed-source fuzzing technologies into the Test Resource Management Center's Vader Modular Fuzzer. In addition, we will be working on new approaches for harnessing and crash triage. More details can be found here.

National Science Foundation Grant to Secure Scientific Software

Very excited to start work on a new project with Professor Stefan Nagy at the University of Utah. The project, funded by the National Science Foundation, seeks to develop high-performance, systematic fuzzing techniques that can be applied to the scientific software ecosystem. Cyber Innovation & Society

The kickoff meeting of the Cyber Innovation and Society was a big success. There were 37 people from across grounds who met and brainstormed about the next steps of CISI. The meeting began with opening remarks by the Vice President for Research, Melur K. "Ram" Ramasubramanian. Many great ideas came out of the meeting, and we are moving ahead. DARPA CHASE

A contract under the DARPA CHASE (Cyber Hunting at Scale) program was awarded on 08-May-2018. This $7.5M effort seeks to develop techniques to detect advanced threats, including DDoS, Ransomware, and Advanced Persistent Threats. The PIs are Malathi Veerraghavan, Jack Davidson, and Don Brown. The project is a collaborative effort with Virginia Tech, Northeastern University, and Commonwealth Computer Research. A project website is coming soon.
