Friday Poem

Two poems; last week’s about light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation and today’s about grudges and birthday cake.

Untitled Poem

“‍Laser‍” is an acronym (as was the older “‍maser‍”)
Describing how a laser beam is made inside a laser.
The acronymic meaning isn’t used (that I have heard)
“‍Laser makes the light like that‍”’s so wrong it sounds absurd.

Untitled Poem

In Iceland, ’neath a cold, low sun
Old Thorvold found the battle done
Before he even donned his boot
By foes’ and allies’ odd cahoot.
With crutch and boot (tap thump, tap thump)
He hobbled up the battling hump
And at the top found birthday cake
That Geir had baked for Thorvold’s sake.
This Geir was Thorvold’s life-long foe
And hoped a cake would outward show
How much he treasured all their fights
Which helped to fill long winter nights.
But Thorvold didn’t see it so
And thought a cake could only show
That Geir thought Thorvold’s growing age
Might slake his world-famous rage.
Then as both armies joined in song
Old Thorvold’s crutch came out quite strong
And landed Geir an awesome blow
Releasing soul from flesh below.
Geirs’ men dropped cake and blades came out
To try this murderer to route;
From Thorvold’s side more blades arose,
And so the battle onward goes.
