Discussion 1 write-up due Feb. 25

Last week we ran out of time before having the discussion on “Governments, Companies, and User Privacy”. There has been an Assignment on the Collab site with a due date of today, but I had planned (but forgot) to delay this. We will have this discussion today (Feb. 18) in the first part of the class, and the deadline to submit on Collab will be Feb. 25. (The few of you who have turned it in are ahead of the game.)

SEAS Career Days now!

The SEAS Spring Career Days event started today! Here’s the details about
Below is a description of what it is. A list of companies attending is here.

Looking for a summer internship? Check out the list, and take your resume and stop by some tables in the next two days.

Date: February 8th, 9th, 10th, 2010
Time: 10:00am - 3:00pm
Where: Thornton Hall A-wing

This is a series of mini-career fairs specifically for employers recruiting engineering students. This is an opportunity to recruit for last minute full-time positions, internships, and co-op opportunities. The program was designed to meet the varied recruiting need of employers considering the current economic climate and needs of smaller organizations. This annual event traditionally takes place during the spring semester in mid-February.

Self-Learning HW posted

The instructions for the self-learning activity are posted. See the link to Assignments on the course webpage. We’ll chat in class about this, but put your questions or ideas about a possible topic in the Discussion tool for this. And be sure to turn in the first part by the Feb. 18 deadline on Collab’s Assignment tool

Free Microsoft SW for you!

As a CS student in our department, you can get free copies of some Microsoft software products through a program called ELMS for MSDNAA. I asked our staff to register each of you, so around Jan 25/26, you should have received a mysterious email with this header info:

Subject: Account Activated!
From: elms_support@e-academy.com

You can use the info in that to login at this link.
Information about what this is and how it works is on the CS department systems info page here. This also explains how to get your password emailed to you -- do that if you can’t find the email mentioned above. Note that your user id is your UVa email address, e.g. mst3k@virginia.edu

What can you get? Here’s the list. Note that the license says (I think) that you can use these as long as you’re a student.
